The "R" hand shape can be used to show objects that are classified as
rope-like,
braided, and/or twisted. It is also used in two versions of the sign for "doughnut."
Thus there is a precedent for preferring
an "R" handshape for signs involving rope-like dough shapes such as a
pretzel.
The "R" handshape is also used for the sign "CIGAR" which is tubular and is made
from rolled tobacco leaves.
